The north shore of Lake Superior is amethyst country, and amethyst is Ontario’s mineral emblem: the Thunder Bay Amethyst Mine Panorama, the largest amethyst deposit in Canada, is a public fee-dig where you pick deep-purple crystal out of the ground and pay by the pound. The purple here often wears a skin of red hematite, a Superior signature.
