Keokuk geodes

Geodes (quartz, calcite)

Among the most famous geodes in the world, and Iowa’s state rock. In the bluffs where Iowa, Missouri and Illinois meet at Keokuk, hollow stone spheres weather out of the shale, and when you crack them they are lined with sparkling quartz, and sometimes calcite, dolomite, pyrite or rare blue chalcedony. There are fee-dig farms around Keokuk and across the river where you fill a bucket and split them on the spot. PUBLIC fee digs (private farms), Lee County and nearby.
