The overlook at Hibbing puts you on the rim of a man-made canyon more than three miles long and 500 feet deep, the largest open-pit iron mine in the world and a National Historic Landmark, still working. The Mesabi is the greatest iron deposit ever found, soft hematite that could be shovelled straight out of the ground, and it fed the steel for two world wars. The overlook is PUBLIC and free in season; the pit itself is an active mine, so the view is the visit. Collectors find banded jasper-hematite on the range’s public dumps and shops.
