Soudan Underground Mine

Minnesota

Minnesota’s oldest iron mine, opened in 1882, and the deepest: the cage drops you half a mile in three minutes, then a train runs you three-quarters of a mile out to the last working face, left as it was when the mine closed in 1962. They called it the Cadillac of underground mines because it was dry and well built. The bottom level also housed a physics laboratory hunting neutrinos and dark matter, using half a mile of rock as a shield. PUBLIC state park tours, Tower.
