Hampton Butte produces a petrified wood no other locality matches: a deep green, sometimes blue-green, that takes a glass polish and shows the grain of the original conifer through it. Colour comes from celadonite in the silica. The good ground has been hunted for eighty years so plan on hiking and on float rather than a hole, and check the boundary because part of the butte is patented and posted. Petrified wood has its own federal allowance on the public side, and it is more generous than it sounds: 25 pounds plus one extra piece a day, up to 250 pounds a year, for your own enjoyment and never for sale, and friends cannot pool their allowances to carry out a bigger piece.
