Hampton Butte produces a petrified wood no other locality matches: a deep green, sometimes blue-green, that takes a glass polish and shows the grain of the original conifer through it. Colour comes from celadonite in the silica. The good ground has been hunted for eighty years so plan on hiking and on float rather than a hole, and check the boundary because part of the butte is patented and posted. Mixed public and private, Crook and Deschutes counties.
