Thirteen hundred years ago Newberry threw a river of glass into its own caldera, and it is still there: 1.1 square miles of black obsidian and grey pumice, the youngest lava flow in Oregon, with a trail and staircase going up onto the surface of it. People quarried this glass for tools for thousands of years and it moved in trade for hundreds of miles. Collecting is PROHIBITED inside the national monument, so this one is to walk on and photograph. If you want obsidian to take home, Glass Butte is an hour east and it is legal there.
