A quarter-mile slash in the granite bedrock at Sutton, up to seventy feet deep, with walls that in places nearly close overhead and a floor of tumbled boulders. It was probably cut catastrophically by meltwater at the end of the last glaciation. The named crevices and squeezes, Fat Man’s Misery, the Corn Crib, the Coffin, are real scrambling, and ice can persist in the bottom into summer. It is not a cave system, but it is the best underground-feeling ground in eastern Massachusetts. PUBLIC state reservation; the chasm route is a genuine scramble, not a walk.
