From 1965 to 1975 a pure-white deer the neighborhood named Lucy roamed Presidio Park and Mission Hills, source disputed, zoo escapee or a rich woman’s freed pet, beloved either way. She died in the 1975 tranquilizer capture meant to save her from the highway, and the city’s grief built her a monument and bench at Inspiration Point. Ever since, walkers at dawn and dusk report a white deer in the trees, sometimes solid, sometimes mist.
