The second largest concentration of geysers on Earth, around ninety of them along six kilometres of the Geysernaya river on Kamchatka, inside the Kronotsky Nature Reserve. There is no road. Helicopters are the only realistic way in, which is why only about 3,000 people a year came after it opened to foreigners in 1991. On 3 June 2007 a massive mudflow buried two thirds of the valley and it looked finished, but the water dropped back by 9 June and the major geysers were still going; a further landslide in 2013 actually freed springs the first one had dammed. It is a live and moving landscape rather than a preserved one. UNESCO World Heritage.
