The tallest tepee on Earth, built to hold the 1988 Olympic flame
Sixty-five and a half metres of painted steel standing over the Trans-Canada at Medicine Hat, which makes it the tallest tepee in the world and about the height of a twenty-storey building. It was not built for here. It was designed for the 1988 Winter Olympics and stood in Calgary’s McMahon Stadium holding the Olympic flame through the opening and closing ceremonies, and after the Games a Medicine Hat businessman bought it privately and gave it to the city, which raised it here in 1991. Ten masts carry storyboards, each of them a large painted circle of Indigenous history and culture in southern Alberta. It stands beside the Saamis archaeological site on Seven Persons Coulee, which is the older and quieter reason this ground matters.
