A mystical order’s Egyptian temple of a museum, with a walk-in tomb
The Ancient Mystical Order Rosae Crucis, AMORC, keeps its headquarters in San Jose, and beside it the largest collection of ancient Egyptian antiquities in the western United States. H. Spencer Lewis, who founded the order in America, began collecting with a small statue of the lion goddess Sekhmet, helped fund the 1921 excavations at Amarna, the city of the pharaoh Akhenaten, and opened a museum to the public in 1928. The present buildings, opened in 1966, are built in ancient Egyptian style in an Egyptian Revival park, with a planetarium beside them. Inside are a walk-in replica of a rock-cut tomb based on Rosicrucian expeditions to Beni Hasan, a child mummy studied by CT scan at Stanford, and since 2015 an exhibit on the seven stages of the alchemical process.
