Part of the largest surviving block of undisturbed tropical rainforest in Honduras, 5,300 square kilometres of core with a 150,000 hectare buffer around it, running from mangrove swamp and coastal wetland up into mountain forest. Thirty-nine mammals, 377 birds, 126 reptiles and amphibians, over 2,000 vascular plants, with jaguar, tapir, giant anteater and West Indian manatee among them. Over 2,000 people live inside it, Miskito, Pech, Garifuna and ladino, working the land the way they have. UNESCO listed it in 1982 and has had it on the World Heritage in Danger list from 1996 to 2007 and again from 2011 to now, because of illegal logging, farms pushing in, and unmanaged tourism damaging the archaeology.
