The mine behind the name Gold Coast
Ashanti gold is the reason the Gold Coast was called the Gold Coast, and Obuasi is where that history turned industrial. Commercial mining began in 1897 with the founding of the Ashanti Goldfields Corporation, and for a time this was one of the ten largest gold mines in the world. Ashanti merged with AngloGold in 2004. After heavy losses the mine was halted in late 2014 with more than 5,000 people laid off, and a large security force stayed on the property because artisanal miners moved in on it; at that point Obuasi had produced, plus still held in resource, about 62 million troy ounces. It sits 60 kilometres southwest of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region, underground, deep, and old.
