Narasingha Deva I of the Eastern Ganga dynasty built this around 1250 as a chariot for the sun god, in stone, at full size: twenty-four carved wheels along the base, drawn by horses, and the wheels are not decoration. They are sundials, and they work, accurately enough to read the time to the minute if you know how. The main tower stood about 70 metres and came down in 1837; the assembly hall in front of it still stands 39 metres. European sailors from around 1676 called it the Black Pagoda, a dark tiered mass they used as a landmark, and there is a persistent story that a great lodestone at the top pulled their compasses wrong and was removed for it.
