The Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum

Malta · Paola, Malta

Three levels of chambers cut down into soft globigerina limestone in Malta, dating to about 3300 to 3000 BC with possible use as early as 4000 BC. The top level sits a metre below the street. Inside are the Main Chamber, the Decorated Room with its spirals, the Holy of Holies aligned on the winter solstice, and the Oracle Room, which has the property that any voice made in it produces a powerful resonance carried through the site, which is either an extraordinary accident or the point. An estimated 7,000 people were buried here. A small number of the skulls show abnormal cranial elongation. Conservation limits admission to exactly 80 people a day and you must book online in advance; it reopened after renovation on 15 May 2017. Paola, Malta.
