Somewhere between 1,260 and 1,776 near-identical grassy cones spread over 50 square kilometres of Bohol, most of them 30 to 50 metres tall and the largest 120. They are conical karst: limestone dissolved by rain, surface water and groundwater after the beds were pushed up out of the sea and fractured by tectonics, leaving the harder cores standing. In the wet season they are green. In the dry season the grass on them dies back and the whole field turns brown, which is where the name comes from, and it is the only time of year the thing actually looks like its postcard. Viewing decks at Carmen, about 55 km from Tagbilaran, and at Sagbayan Peak about 18 km further.
