Thirty-three miles to the Klondike, made obsolete overnight in 1899
Thirty-three miles over the Coast Mountains from Dyea, Alaska, to Bennett in British Columbia, and through the late 1890s this was the main route from the coast to the Yukon goldfields. Then the railway went in from Skagway over the parallel White Pass, and the Chilkoot was obsolete almost overnight, in 1899. It is a National Historic Landmark on the American side and a National Historic Site on the Canadian side, and since 1998 the two halves have been joined into one international park across the border. You can still walk it. Most of the stampeders never got rich, and this trail is what they actually left behind.
