Where the Three Swedes set off the Nome rush, and the BEACH is a landmark
In September 1898 three men remembered as the Three Swedes, one of them Erik Lindblom, found gold on Mountain Creek and then on Snow Creek, and the Nome Gold Rush went off the following year. The National Historic Landmark district, listed in 1978, takes in four of those places: the Anvil Creek gold discovery site, Snow Creek Placer Claim No. 1, the Erik Lindblom Placer Claim, and a little over twelve acres of Nome Beach itself. That last one is the tell. At Nome the gold was in the shoreline, which is why a stretch of beach is a national landmark standing alongside the creeks.
