A 1913 cable ferry that still carries the Dinosaur Trail over the Red Deer River
A cable ferry across the Red Deer River in the badlands, commissioned in 1913 with Andre Bleriot working it, and still crossing. It carries the North Dinosaur Trail, Highway 838, over the river and joins the two halves of the loop out of Drumheller, which means the drive works as a circle instead of an out-and-back. It runs from late April to November, it is free, and it takes a couple of minutes. There is no better way to understand how deep this valley is cut than to be down on the water in the middle of it, looking up at the coulee walls that the road was just on top of.
