The beyul, the hidden valleys

Tibetan Buddhist tradition holds that Padmasambhava concealed beyul, hidden valleys, across the Himalaya as refuges to be opened by the right person at the right time of need. This is not read as metaphor by everyone who follows it: lamas have led communities over passes looking for them, and Khumbu itself, the Everest valley, is regarded as one. Whether you take it as sacred geography or as a real tradition of finding survivable high country, it shaped where people settled in these mountains. Told with respect as living Himalayan practice.
