Churubusco, 1949: a farmer claimed a snapping turtle the size of a dining table lived in his seven-acre lake. The hunt drew national press, drained part of the lake, and never produced the turtle. The town renamed itself Turtle Town and still holds a festival. Alligator snappers do reach two hundred pounds, which is what keeps the story alive.
