The westernmost fur posts on the plains, opened and closed seven times

Two rival fur posts stood on this bend of the North Saskatchewan: Rocky Mountain House for the North West Company and Acton House for the Hudson’s Bay Company, both opened in 1799. They were the westernmost posts on the plains, the jumping-off point for the mountains, and they were opened and closed seven times between then and 1876 as the trade and the peace shifted. David Thompson wintered here and went west from here looking for a pass. By 1980 two stone chimneys were all that stood; it is a National Historic Site now, with the trails, the bison paddock and the interpretive centre above the river.
