A Revolutionary earth fort still holding its points in the grass

Old Ninety Six, about sixty miles south of Greenville, preserving the ground of a small town founded in the early 1700s and the earthwork fort that was fought over in the Revolution. The site runs to 1,022 acres. It went on the National Register in 1969, became a National Historic Landmark in 1973 and a National Historic Site in 1976. The star fort is the thing to walk: banks of thrown-up earth still holding their points in the grass after two and a half centuries.
