Mount Nemrut

At 2,150 metres in the Anti-Taurus, King Antiochus I of Commagene built himself a tomb-sanctuary in 62 BC and ringed it with seated statues eight to nine metres tall: himself, two lions, two eagles, and gods deliberately fused out of Greek and Persian ones, Zeus-Oromasdes, Apollo-Mithras-Helios-Hermes, Heracles-Artagnes-Ares. Iconoclasts later took the heads off, and the heads now sit on the ground around the terraces staring out, which is the image everyone knows. Behind them is a tumulus 49 metres high and 152 across, built of loose rubble so that any shaft dug into it fills itself back in. Excavations from 1881 onward, including Theresa Goell’s long campaigns from 1954, have never found the tomb of Antiochus. UNESCO listed it in 1987. Adıyaman Province, Turkey; people go up for sunrise.
