Sudan has more pyramids than Egypt and almost nobody goes. Meroë stood on the east bank of the Nile as the capital of the Kingdom of Kush from about 590 BC until Kush collapsed in the fourth century AD, and the site is marked by more than two hundred pyramids in three groups, steeper and narrower than the Egyptian kind, raised between roughly 300 BC and AD 350. In 1834 an Italian named Giuseppe Ferlini dug here and carried off jewellery that sits in Berlin and Munich today; his methods were what passed for archaeology then and would be called looting now. UNESCO World Heritage since 2011, about 200 km northeast of Khartoum near Shendi.
