The lowest point in Africa, 155 metres below sea level, and the third lowest place on land anywhere after the Dead Sea and the Sea of Galilee. It is also close to the saltiest water on the planet, fifth in the world: about 300 grams of salt per litre, reaching 40 percent concentration 20 metres down, roughly ten times the sea and saltier than the Dead Sea. No river runs into it. The water arrives underground, through geothermal springs fed from the Ghoubbet El Kharab bay 10 km southeast, and then evaporates and leaves its salt behind, so the shore is a white crust you can walk out onto.
