Ironbottom Sound

Solomon Islands · Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands

Sailors renamed this water for what is lying on the bottom of it. Before the war it was Savo Sound, the stretch between Guadalcanal, Savo Island and the Nggela group at the south end of The Slot. Over fifty ships went down here during the Guadalcanal campaign of 1942 and 1943, across five main actions: Savo Island on 9 August 1942, Cape Esperance on 11 and 12 October, the naval battle of Guadalcanal from 13 to 15 November, Tassafaronga on 30 November, and Operation I-Go through the first half of April 1943. Both navies are down there, in some cases within sight of each other. Every year on the anniversary a US ship comes into the sound and drops a wreath. Solomon Islands.
