The Yellow River runs about 30 metres wide here, 50 in flood, and then the hills close on both sides and squeeze it to 20 or 30 before it drops more than 20 metres off a lip of rock. The name means flask mouth, or kettle mouth, because that is exactly what it looks like: the whole river being poured out of a spout. It is the largest waterfall on the Yellow River and the second largest in China, and the width of it changes with the season, broad and brown in the rains and a hard narrow chute the rest of the year. On the border of Shanxi and Shaanxi, about 165 km west of Fenxi County.
