Giant Mine and the arsenic under Yellowknife

Giant Mine produced more than seven million ounces of gold beside Yellowknife between 1948 and 2004, and roasting the arsenopyrite ore to get it out left 237,000 tonnes of arsenic trioxide dust stored in chambers underground. It is enough to poison every person on Earth several times over, and it is kept in place by freezing the ground around it, in perpetuity, at public expense. Yellowknives Dene First Nation people were poisoned in the early years and a child died in 1951. The remediation is one of the largest contaminated-site projects in Canadian history.
