Sir John Franklin sailed in 1845 with 129 men to force the Northwest Passage and every one of them died. HMS Erebus and HMS Terror were beset in the ice off King William Island; the crews abandoned ship and walked, and the archaeology and Inuit testimony together record starvation, lead and botulism, and cannibalism at the end. Dozens of search expeditions over 170 years found relics and graves but never the ships. Then Inuit oral history, which had been describing their locations accurately the whole time, led searchers to Erebus in 2014 and Terror in 2016. Both are protected national historic sites and diving them is controlled.
