One of the great cities of the ancient Mediterranean, and it died of silt. The Temple of Artemis here was one of the seven wonders of the ancient world and took 120 years to build; one column now stands in a field. The Library of Celsus, put up about AD 125 as a memorial to Tiberius Julius Celsus Polemaeanus, held some 12,000 scrolls and its facade has been carefully re-erected, which is what most people come for. The theatre seated around 25,000. What killed the place was the Küçük Menderes river filling in the harbour: a port city with no port, and the sea is now five kilometres away across flat ground you can see from the ruins.
