The largest pink granite monadnock in America, 425 feet of bare rock
A dome of pink granite standing 425 feet above the brush of the Llano Uplift and 1,825 feet above the sea, and the largest pink granite monadnock in the United States. A monadnock is a hill that outlasted the country around it: everything softer eroded away and this did not. It covers roughly 640 acres across the line between Gillespie and Llano counties, 17 miles north of Fredericksburg, and it has been a National Natural Landmark since 1971. Walk up the bare rock towards dusk and the whole Hill Country goes flat and gold beneath you.
