A city sitting on one continuous ore body, still working
An outback city built on a single enormous body of silver, lead and zinc ore, the Line of Lode, in the Barrier Range of far western New South Wales on Wilyakali country. It has been mined continuously longer than anywhere else in Australia, and the ore made more than money: the company founded here in 1885 became BHP, and the working conditions in these mines drove the industrial history of the country as much as its economic one. The lode runs through the middle of town as a man-made hill, and the Line of Lode Reserve with its miners’ memorial and visitor centre stands on top of it. Broken Hill was put on the National Heritage List in 2015, the first whole city in Australia to be listed. It is 1,100 kilometres from Sydney and closer to Adelaide.
