Idaho ran this sandstone prison from 1872 until a pair of riots closed it in 1973, quarried and built by the convicts themselves. Solitary confinement was a stone box called Siberia, out in the yard, and the gallows saw ten hangings. You can walk the cell blocks, Death Row and the solitary building on your own, which is what makes it land: it is empty, open and cold. PUBLIC historic site, Boise.
