Out on the empty Channel Country of outback Queensland, travellers for over a century have reported the Min Min light, a glowing orb that appears on the dark horizon and follows a car or a rider for miles, keeping pace, never letting itself be reached. Aboriginal tradition knew such lights long before the pub at Min Min gave this one its name. Scientists have shown that a temperature inversion over the flat land can bend the light of a vehicle or a homestead from far below the horizon, a real, reproducible effect, which does nothing to lessen how deeply unsettling it is alone in the dark.
