The Canadian Pacific built a Scottish baronial castle in the middle of the Rockies and then let it fill up with stories. Three of them are famous. A bride is said to have caught her dress on the staircase candles, fallen, and broken her neck on her way down to the ballroom, and she is the figure people report on the stairs; she has been on a Canadian stamp and a collector coin, and there is no written record of any such death here, which is worth knowing and does not make the staircase less atmospheric. Sam the bellman is the friendly one, and he was real: a popular Scottish bellman working here into the 1950s who said he would come back, and guests still report an old man in an out-of-date uniform giving directions. And then there is room 873, which the hotel is said to have sealed. The building itself is the reason to come: a working hotel, open to anyone who walks in for a look at the hall.
