The City of the Dead, Cairo

A four-mile-long necropolis in Cairo where the Mamluk and Ottoman dead lie in domed tomb-houses, and where, for generations, living families have made homes among and inside the tombs, so the cemetery has streets, shops and electricity. Egyptians call it al-Qarafa. It is a working neighbourhood as much as a graveyard, and parts have been demolished for road building. Visit quietly; people live here. PUBLIC streets, Cairo.
