Haunted place

Lifta

Lifta, Jerusalem

A stone village on the western edge of Jerusalem, emptied of its Palestinian inhabitants in 1948 and never resettled, so its vaulted houses, terraces and spring stand roofless among the fig trees, the most intact abandoned village of its kind. It is contested ground, argued over by developers, preservationists and former residents. A quiet, heavy place. This region carries travel advisories.
