Khatyn

Khatyn, near Minsk (Belarus)

On 22 March 1943 the village of Khatyn in Belarus was destroyed and its people burned alive; 149 died, 75 of them children. It was one of hundreds of Belarusian villages annihilated. The memorial that stands there marks every vanished homestead with a low obelisk topped by a bell, and the bells ring together every thirty seconds across the empty clearing. Belarus lost roughly a quarter of its population in the war. Visit with respect. PUBLIC memorial.
