Frankenstein Castle

Darmstadt, Hesse (Germany)

A ruined hilltop castle above Darmstadt, Germany, and the likeliest seed of the most famous horror novel ever written: the alchemist Johann Conrad Dippel was born here in 1673 and experimented with bodies and an “elixir of life,” and Mary Shelley travelled the Rhine nearby. The castle keeps a Grey Lady and a knight said to fight a demon each Walpurgisnacht. PUBLIC ruin, free to walk, Odenwald.
