A ruined hilltop castle above Darmstadt, Germany, and the likeliest seed of the most famous horror novel ever written: the alchemist Johann Conrad Dippel was born here in 1673 and experimented with bodies and an “elixir of life,” and Mary Shelley travelled the Rhine nearby.
