Culloden Moor

Culloden, near Inverness (Highland, Scotland)

On this bleak moor near Inverness, in less than an hour on 16 April 1746, the last pitched battle on British soil destroyed the Jacobite cause and, with it, the old Highland way of life; some 1,500 clansmen fell and were buried where they dropped, under stones that still carry their clan names. People report the moor as one of the most oppressively sad and haunted places in Britain, quiet in a way that stops the birds. Walk it with respect; it is a war grave. PUBLIC (National Trust for Scotland), near Inverness.
