Winterswijk quarry

Triassic fossils, celestine

The Netherlands is almost entirely sediment and sea, so its one classic collecting site matters: the Winterswijk limestone quarry near the German border exposes 245-million-year-old Triassic tidal flats and yields marine reptile bones (nothosaurs), fossil tracks, and crystals of celestine and calcite. Access is by organised collecting days through the local geology society, not casual entry.
