The same ancient basalt flows that give Brazil its geodes run under northern Uruguay, and the country is one of the world’s great sources of banded agate and hollow amethyst geodes, cut and polished around Salto and Artigas. Uruguayan agate was shipped to the German cutting town of Idar-Oberstein by the ton in the 1800s and built that industry. Buy at the Salto and Artigas workshops.
