The Tenere and the Sahara’s bones

Fossils, meteorites

The Tenere desert of Niger is one of the emptiest places on Earth and one of the richest fossil grounds: Gadoufaoua has yielded whole herds of dinosaurs including the huge crocodilian Sarcosuchus, the “SuperCroc,” and Gobero, found nearby, is the largest Stone Age graveyard known in the Sahara, from a time when this sand was lakeshore. Fossil export is regulated and heavily abused; buy nothing without provenance. Severe travel advisories.
