The rivers running off the tepuis of Venezuela’s Gran Sabana carry diamonds and gold, and the boom towns of Icabaru and Santa Elena grew on hand-dug and dredged workings in the 1930s-40s; the fabled Bolivar diamonds came from here. Mining is informal and hard on the rivers and on Pemon land. Venezuela carries severe travel advisories. A geology/heritage pin.
