The Fairbanks gold district

Placer gold

The Italian prospector Felix Pedro struck gold in the creeks north of the Tanana in 1902 and built Fairbanks, and the district became one of the greatest gold producers in Alaska, worked first by hand, then by the giant bucket-line dredges (Gold Dredge 8 still stands and gives tours where you pan guaranteed gold). The Fox, Cleary and Ester creek country still draws recreational miners, and there are pay-to-pan operations all around town. The heart of interior Alaska’s gold.
