Mount Pentelicus marble

Pentelic marble

The Parthenon is made of this. The quarries on Mount Pentelicus north of Athens gave the flawless white, faintly golden marble that built the Acropolis and the great sculpture of classical Greece, cut and hauled down the mountain by hand from the 6th century BC. The ancient quarry faces and the sledge roads are still visible on the mountainside. The quarries are PUBLIC hillside; the marble is in every museum on Earth.
