The rarest and most valuable opal on Earth, the black opal, comes almost entirely from this one small town in New South Wales. It fires red and green against a dark body like nothing else in gemstones. The diggings run for miles, and there are public fossicking areas where you can sort the heaps. Same hard rule as all opal country: stay well clear of open shafts. PUBLIC fossick yards; claims are PRIVATE.
