One of the hardest jobs on Earth, and one of the strangest sights. Inside the Ijen crater in East Java, Indonesia, miners carry 70-90 kilogram loads of solid yellow sulphur out of the caldera on their shoulders, working beside vents where ignited sulphuric gases burn with an electric-blue flame visible only at night, and beside the largest acidic crater lake in the world. Guided PUBLIC hikes go to the rim and the blue fire; the gas is genuinely dangerous.
