The white and rose marble of the Estremoz anticline in the Alentejo has been quarried for two thousand years, since the Romans built with it at Evora, and Portugal is one of the largest marble exporters on Earth. The quarries are enormous white staircases cut into the plain, some hundreds of metres deep. ACTIVE industrial quarries; the towns of Estremoz, Borba and Vila Vicosa are built entirely of the stone.
